Expected Turnaround Time
Results Available 24 hours from Receipt at the laboratory.
Specimen Collection Criteria
Collect one gold top SST tube (minimum whole blood: 4 mL). Let specimen clot for 30-60 minutes and then centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Refrigerate after centrifugation.
Rejection Criteria
Grossly hemolyzed specimens, quantity not sufficient, improperly labeled
Specimen Validity and Retention
Centrifuged SST Tubes:Room Temperature (20-25°C): 7 daysRefrigerated (2-8°C): 7 daysFrozen (-20°C or greater): UnacceptableSerum Aliquots:Room Temperature (20-25°C): 2 daysRefrigerated (2-8°C): 7 daysFrozen (-20°C or greater): 7 daysSpecimens retained for 7 days after testing
Courier Transportation
Transport centrifuged tube refrigerated (2-8°C)
Clinical Utility
Creatinine measurements are useful in assessing renal status and monitoring of dialysis.
Special Notes
The CKD-EPI Equation is utilized to calculate the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). CKD-EPI Equation: eGFR = 142 x min (Scr/k, 1)α x max(Scr/k, 1)-1.200 x 0.9938Age x 1.012 (if female) where:Scr is serum creatinine in mg/dL.K is 0.7 for females and 0.9 for males.α is -0.241 for females and -0.302 for males.Min indicates the minimum of Scr/K or 1.Max indicates the maximum of Scr/K or 1.The stages of kidney disease will be included on all reports:G1: Normal GFR - Greater than 90 mL/min/1.73m2.G2: Mildly decreased GFR - 60-89 mL/min/1.73m2.G3a: Mildly to moderately decreased GFR - 45-59 mL/min/1.73m2.G3b: Moderately to severely decreased GFR - 30-44 mL/min/1.73m2.G4: Severely decreased GFR - 15-29 mL/min/1.73m2.G5: Kidney failure - GFR less than 15 mL/min/1.73m2
