Specimen Collection Criteria
Collect one gold top SST tube (minimum whole blood: 4 mL). Let specimen clot for 30-60 minutes and then centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Refrigerate after centrifugation.

Grossly hemolyzed specimens, female patients, quantity not sufficient, improperly labeled

Clinical Utility
Total PSA tests are frequently used to monitor those with a history of prostate cancer. It is also recommended by the American Cancer Society to utilize as a screening test starting at age 50, although there are exceptions for at risk populations.
